The Day Everything Changed: My Recovery Story and Why I Need Your Help

On Father’s Day, my life changed in an instant. While I was simply crossing the street, I was hit by a truck turning left out of a Kroger parking lot. The physical aftermath was massive. I had to undergo major surgery on my right leg to insert a metal plate with seven screws, put my cartilage back in place, and repair a torn meniscus, which left me with 38 total surgical staples. On top of that, I suffered a broken left wrist and a severe sprain in my left ankle.

I was receiving inpatient rehabilitation, but my insurance abruptly stopped covering it before I had regained my independence, so I was discharged home. The reality is that I live completely alone. Everyday tasks that most people don't think twice about—like going down to the basement to do laundry, walking out to the mailbox, or preparing a basic meal—became immediate, overwhelming obstacles.

I recently had a follow-up appointment with my doctor to check on my progress and review new X-rays. Thankfully, there is a bit of positive news. My doctor gave me permission to start using my left arm a little more, as long as I’m not putting my full body weight on it, and I can occasionally use my right foot to steady myself for better balance.

While having a little more mobility is a huge relief, I am still a long way from being independent. My doctor wants me to stay on my walker for several more weeks. Because my shower is a converted bathtub, my current mobility restrictions mean there is still no safe way for me to get into it, even with help. I still have a long road of physical therapy and occupational therapy ahead to rebuild my strength, balance, and ability to handle daily tasks on my own.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported me so far. Thanks to the overwhelming kindness of donors and people sharing my posts, my GoFundMe has already raised over $3,000. Seeing that support come in during the lowest point of my life has meant more than words can express.

That generosity was a critical lifeline, but because I live alone and remain unable to work, the financial strain continues to build up. While I have an attorney handling my case, legal claims take significant time to resolve, and that doesn't stop everyday bills from coming in today. My bank recently declined my application for a small loan, and I am still struggling to cover essential monthly expenses, including my mortgage. I’ve been putting what I can on credit cards, but basic living costs and mortgage payments require actual cash flow that I simply don't have while out of work.

I really hate having to ask for help, but right now I don't have many options. I’m determined to recover, regain my independence, and move forward one step at a time, but I desperately need a continued lifeline to get through this next phase of recovery.

If you are able to support me, any amount you can donate goes directly toward keeping a roof over my head, paying essential bills, and buying groceries while I heal. If donating isn’t possible, simply sharing this post or my GoFundMe link on social media or with friends makes a massive difference in reaching people who might be able to help.

To everyone who has already donated, shared my links, checked in on me, or kept me in your thoughts—thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your kindness is what's keeping me going.
